WORLD’S BIGGEST ELECTRIC RATE SAVINGS CLUB WELCOMES TEXAS PUC OVERHAUL OF POWERTOCHOOSE.ORG
One Big Switch is Texas’ newest electric bill savings club and have today welcomed the Texas Public Utility Commission’s (PUC) proposed overhaul of the Power to Choose website.
Over the next 4 weeks, the PUC are making changes to PowerToChoose.org in a bid to improve price transparency by eradicating tiered-rate offers which trick consumers into severely costly plans.
These offers are designed to game the public website in a way which promotes them as the cheapest on the market. This tactic has crippled what should otherwise be a competitive market.
Champions of competitive energy markets, One Big Switch has over 1,047,000 members in Australia, 145,000 in Ireland, 45,000 in Scotland and now 70,000 in Texas after launching in June of this year.
One Big Switch’s aim is to increase competition and transparency in energy markets. They do this by:
- Inviting thousands of consumers to join ; cost and obligation free
- Using this group buying power to unlock discounted fixed rates from electric companies
- Offering these exclusively discounted rates to members to switch to or use to shop around
One Big Switch launched in Texas because the energy market appeared to be in desperate need of transparency and increased competition. Tiered rates were identified as the biggest barrier to this.
One Big Switch Director of Campaigns, David Liston today commented on the PUC’s move;
“We work in deregulated energy markets right around the world. Never have we seen one with so much potential but so severely hindered by a website like Power to Choose.
“Scrapping tiered rate offers is a great first move by the PUC and we applaud them for doing so. Power to Choose should be a good resource for people looking to save, unfortunately it hasn’t been.
“Not only do we welcome the PUC’s move to help bring some transparency to the system, but we also call on retailers to take some responsibility in the kind of offers they make.
“The majority of the tiered rate offers available have been conceived unconscionably and we ask retailers to take some responsibility in setting rates in a way that is conducive to competition.
“For consumers, I would encourage everyone to shop around. Avoid tiered rates and use the Electricity Fact Labels to compare offers. There are a lot of different comparison style sites out there. Use them or even contact your own provider and demand a good fixed rate.
“For anyone looking for single, straight forward fixed rate offers from a respected provider, One Big Switch have exclusive rates available only at . If you like the rates, then switch, if not, use them to negotiate with a preferred new provider or even your existing provider.”
Joining One Big Switch is entirely cost and obligation free.
